Guido Gambone, born in 1909 in Montella (AV), moved with his family at a young age to Vietri sul Mare. At fifteen, he became an apprentice in Francesco Avallone’s workshop.
During these formative years, he worked with major ceramic manufacturers and came into contact with the so-called “colony of German ceramists” active in Vietri in the 1920s and 1930s (Richard Doelker, Irene Kowaliska, Gunther Stundemann, Elle Schwarz, Barbara Margarethe, Thewalt-Hannasch), absorbing their whimsical Mediterranean style.
Strongly influenced by Irene Kowaliska, Gambone developed his own style, attentive to primitive forms and abstract-figurative decoration, eventually founding his own workshop.
In 1936, he moved to Florence, giving new impetus to his art by developing a particular type of glaze that would bear his name, gradually establishing himself as a renowned artist. In 1948, he exhibited his works at the VIII Triennale di Milano, and in 1950 he first participated in the Venice Biennale and was invited to represent Italy at the exhibition “Italy at Work: Her Renaissance in Design Today” in the United States.
After this experience, he returned to Florence, initiating a new artistic phase that emphasized the sculptural qualities of ceramics, incorporating influences from Miró, Picasso, and Giorgio Morandi.
