“Bavaria porcelain” refers to a specific type of porcelain, made using the same traditional craft techniques since the mid-18th century.
The name, however, comes from the German region of Bavaria, where these porcelains originated by the decree of the ruling house.
Bavaria is rich in kaolin mines, and even today porcelain remains a typical artisanal product, with numerous small workshops, often family-run.

Among the major producers, the Seltmann manufactory is noteworthy, founded in 1901 by Christian and Johann Seltmann.
A few years later, the brothers went their separate ways, and in 1910 Christian opened a factory in Weiden.
The factory quickly expanded, and after the founder’s death, his children took over, opening additional plants: in 1939 the Krummennaab Porcelain and in 1940 the Erbendorf Porcelain.

Like many other factories, they lost much of their workforce during World War II, and in the postwar period, the Krummennaab and Erbendorf plants were occupied by American troops and rendered practically unusable.
In the 1950s, the Seltmann manufactory resumed production, modernized its processes, and remains today one of the few German family-run enterprises in the porcelain industry.
