8 cm Matryoshka
Ussr 1970-80, material wood, cm height 8
A charming 8 cm Russian Matryoshka reveals four entirely different figures nested within, each hand-carved and hand-painted during the USSR era.
Its maker’s stamp on the base certifies its authenticity, while the varied designs give the set a lively, almost narrative quality.
The Matryoshka—also known as the babushka doll—first appeared in the late 19th century, when craftsman Vasilij Zvezdochkin created the earliest wooden model.
In 1890, artist Sergej Maliutin added the now-iconic floral patterns and peasant imagery, drawing inspiration from Japanese nesting figures.
These dolls quickly captured worldwide attention, even earning praise at the 1900 Paris Exposition.
Symbolizing motherhood, fertility, and generational continuity, each nested figure represents a stage of life and the uniqueness of every individual.
This vintage USSR example celebrates that legacy through its diverse, expressive characters.
