The Corona 3 was one of the most successful typewriters in history. This very model was also used by Ernest Hemingway: it is said that Hadley Richardson (his fiancée and later wife) gave it to him on July 21, 1921, his birthday. It proved extremely useful the following year when, as a reporter during the Greece-Turkey War, he was able to send dispatches quickly to his newspaper, the “Toronto Star,” thanks to his indispensable Corona. Its unique design allowed it to be folded into a convenient case. Compact and lightweight, Hemingway considered the Corona 3 “not just a typewriter but a personal companion.” The Corona was stolen, along with all his documents, during a trip to Switzerland, specifically at the Gare de Lyon train station in Paris, and was never recovered. This incident is said to have profoundly affected Hemingway, inspiring a poem dedicated to the loss.
