Voigtlander is one of the world's oldest photography brands, alongside Zeiss and Leica, and plays a leading role in the history of photography.
Founded in Vienna in 1756, the company took its name from its founder, Johann Christoph Voigtländer, and initially produced optical instruments, primarily for microscopes and other scientific equipment.
Among his first creations were the Petzval-type lenses, along with others destined to become famous, such as the Collinear and the Heliar. In 1840, he built the first camera lens, while in 1841, he developed the first all-metal daguerreotype. He later produced plate cameras, built practically by hand.
In 1849, the headquarters moved to Braunschweig, Germany, where Voigtländer & Sohn was founded shortly thereafter. In 1925, it was acquired by Schering AG. Voigtländer subsequently focused its production on affordable photographic equipment, allowing it to remain a market leader until after the Second World War.
In 1956, it was purchased by the Carl Zeiss Foundation and renamed Zeiss Ikon Voigtländer. In 1973, the brand became the property of Rollei until the 1982 crisis, when it was acquired by the Japanese company Cosina in 1990, and finally by the German company Ringfoto & Co. Alfo Marketing KG in 1999.
